What a way to wash away a 36 hour flight odyssey! After seeing the original Roman Baths where they worshipped Minivera and Grogan I soaked, steamed, massaged and dozed my way through Bath yesterday at the ultra modern ‘Thermae Spa Resort’.
What a beautiful city! Charming hoards of towering stone buildings and cathedral spires I wandering through the cobblestone streets falling deeper in love with ‘The West’.
What a great idea to head straight out from Heathrow! As I wound through the meandering countryside I was introduced to England! The homeland! The source and inspiration of much of my childhood literature, movies & stories. I was reminded of the Adelaide hills with the leafless trees and green pastures or should I say the Adelaide Hills remind me of England. The dark rich soil and hand built stone fences.
I gasped when I saw a pheasant this morning driving to Stonehenge. What a beautiful bird! And was sad to recognize a bandicoot, dead on the side of the road although I imagine they are a bit of a pest like raccoons in America?
It’s a beautiful country. I have enjoyed the Brits I have met. I just got talking to a lady who is married to the local Vicar here. She was shocked to hear the entrance fee was ‘SIX QUID!’ I told her that was a good price compared to the Cathedrals and other points of interest I ‘d seen so far. “Ahh” she said “but God needs your money!’. I looked over at this strange and eerie monument and the Salisbury plains dotted with burial mounds and wondered how this wasn’t God?
