Finally I’m home. Well, the Old Goddard Inn in Clyff Pypard sure feels like home. It’s a gorgeous pub/hotel/hostel in the middle of nowhere hosted by a well-travelled lady and her husband (someone has to pay the bills!) on the night of their Poetry Open Mic. I think I’ll read some Banjo Paterson.
Stonehenge was very interesting and certainly gave me a feeling for the wisdom of our ancient cultures. I love the idea of parades and ceremonies throughout the year celebrating the sun, moon and changing of the seasons. They brought those stones 240 miles…………… A real mystery.
Avesbury – a town in the middle of a stone circle is much less touristy and I will be able to explore it more in the morning.
Some of my favourite moments today included watching a lady in gumboots with a long hooked walking stick and two eager beagles crossing a paddock. It just looked soooo English!
Ohh and Salisbury Cathedral!!! It was moving to see this monument to worship. My neck was craning to soak in the majesty of the 13th Century spire. The whole town (touted as a Medieval town) was dwarfed by it. After years of teaching Gothic Art I was able to see the barrel vault cloisters and its varied gargoyles. A real delight.
